Wayne, IL – August 30, 2015 – Three horses made the trip from Leatherdale Farms’ Minnesota base to the Markel/USEF Young and Developing Horse Dressage National Championships at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois, and all three returned home with top 10 finishes in the country’s premier event for young dressage horses.

In his Young Horse Championships debut, rider Mike Suchanek showed that he and the Leatherdale Farms entries fit right in among the United States’ foremost up-and-coming combinations. He and two horses by the Leatherdale stallion First Dance placed well in the 6-year-old championship, with the Hanoverian gelding Fighting Chance L (out of EM Helia by Hohenstein) taking fifth place and the Hanoverian mare Fleur de Lis L (out of EM De La Rosa by De Niro) finishing eighth overall.

Comments from the panels of judges assessing the horses on the two competition days highlighted Fighting Chance L’s elegance, his confidence in the lateral work, and his clear tempo and cadence throughout the trot work. Gary Rockwell, speaking for the panel of judges for Friday’s preliminary test, said the horse showed good talent and energy and remarked on his potential for the future.

Judges noted Fleur de Lis L’s lovely attitude and type, praising her steadiness throughout the test and her uphill balance.

Suchanek also rode Dublin L, a Hanoverian gelding, to ninth place in the 4-year-old championship. Dublin L is by the Leatherdale stallion Damsey, who competed internationally for the German team over the summer, and out of EM Wibranda by Wolkenstein II. Judges highlighted Dublin L’s lovely, consistent contact and rhythmic, balanced canter, noting that he was nicely trained and showed good potential.

“As a first time competitor at the Championships, I didn't know quite what to expect,” Suchanek said. “The horses there were some of the best in the country, ridden by some of the best in the country, and I was proud to be one of those lucky enough to compete there with three talented and beautiful horses bred by the Leatherdales. When the judges said the horses were very correctly trained, that impressed me very much. I felt a lot of pride in my work at that moment.”

Suchanek said he was very happy with the horses’ performances and felt they approached it like any other show despite the increased atmosphere and pressure of a championship event.

“I try to leave any nerves in the barn so my horses find confidence in me in the show ring,” he explained.

United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) coaches were on hand at the championships to provide training sessions and give advice to riders, and Suchanek appreciated the opportunity to meet and work with USEF Dressage Young Horse Coach Christine Traurig.

“Christine Traurig was so nice and very helpful,” Suchanek said. “Her coaching was right in line with what Alison [Sader Larson] was teaching me at home, so we didn't need to make any huge changes at such an important show. I look forward to her help in the future as the Leatherdales have a barn full of quality young horses.”

With the Young Horse Championships complete, Suchanek and the Leatherdale horses will now be aiming for the Great American/USDF Region 4 Dressage Championships Oct. 9-11 in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri. Suchanek has qualified horses at every level from Training Level through Prix St. Georges.

“I want to thank Doug and Louise Leatherdale for breeding such brilliant young horses and for their generosity in giving me the help and support to learn as much about dressage as I can,” Suchanek said. “Without their amazing breeding program, I wouldn't have made it to the Young Horse Championships.”

He added, “I’d like to thank Alison Sader Larson, who has taught me so much about dressage and helped me develop as a rider. She is such a great coach with her accomplished background and her skillful eye. I am also grateful to Jessi Lash, our performance horse manager at Leatherdale Farms in Minnesota, and everyone on our team for their support.”

Wayne, IL – July 29, 2015 – The summer is getting hotter, and the scores are getting higher for Mike Suchanek and Leatherdale Farms’ young horses. They continued their winning streak as they made the trip to Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois, July 18-19 for July Dressage at Lamplight I and II. Suchanek had a perfect show, winning every class and only coming in second to himself.

Suchanek is bringing along several of the horses with the aim of returning to Lamplight Aug. 19-23 for the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Championships. With the qualification period complete, Fleur de Lis L, a Hanoverian mare (First Dance-EM De La Rosa, De Niro), and Fighting Chance L, a Hanoverian gelding (First Dance-EM Helia, Hohenstein), are ranked third and fourth respectively on the Markel/USEF National Young Horse Ranking List for 6-year-olds. Dublin L, a Hanoverian gelding (Damsey-EM Wibranda, Wolkenstein II), is ranked third among 4-year-olds.

All three performed well during July Dressage at Lamplight. Fighting Chance L posted a score of 82.200 percent in the Young Horse Final for 6-year-olds, and Fleur de Lis L had a great go at Third Level, scoring 71.410 percent for Test 3. Dublin L scored 75.588 percent for First Level Test 3, and Hannigan, another 4-year-old, also impressed with a score of 77.206 percent for First Level Test 3.

“I'm very proud of Dublin L and Hannigan for putting up great scores in their respective classes, showing off their talent and rideability,” Suchanek said.

Another goal for the Leatherdale Farms horses this season is the US Dressage Finals in November, and several horses competing at Lamplight earned qualifying scores for the Regional Championships. Hero L competed at Training Level and First Level during the 2014 US Dressage Finals and has advanced quickly since then. The 8-year-old Hanoverian gelding (His Highness-Waterlily L, Wolkenstein II) made his Fourth Level debut with Suchanek at Lamplight. Clearly the step up was no problem for him: he scored 72.973 percent for Fourth Level Test 1.

“Hero has been such a quick learner,” Suchanek said. “It has been a pleasure training him and bringing him up the levels. Being such a big horse, his body is catching up with his inner talent. I'm very proud to have had the chance to start him under saddle and bring him up the levels of dressage.”

Suchanek also performed his first Fourth Level Test 3 in competition with Corenzo, scoring an impressive 73.333 percent.

“I'm so honored to work for such generous and wonderful owners as Doug and Louise Leatherdale,” Suchanek said. “They have been supportive and excited to see their horses go out and show off their talent. I'm very thankful to have them encouraging us to take their horses into the dressage ring.”

He added, “I want to thank Alison Sader-Larson for keeping me on track and helping me advance in my knowledge of dressage. I also want to thank Jessi Lash, our performance horse manager at Leatherdale Farms in Minnesota, and our team for all the hard work they do behind the scenes.”

Leatherdale Horses Take On Three Countries in One Weekend

Long Lake, MN – June 26, 2015 – The international influence of Minnesota-based Leatherdale Farms was evident last weekend as Leatherdale horses went down centerline in three different countries – the Netherlands, Canada and the United States – on two continents.

Competing in Europe for Doug and Louise Leatherdale was Damsey FRH, a 13-year-old Hanoverian stallion (Dressage Royal-Ria Grande, Ritual). He stands at Hengststation Jens Meyer in Dorum, Germany, alongside several other Leatherdale stallions. Damsey and rider Steffen Frahm traveled from Germany to the Netherlands to make their German team debut at the Rotterdam Nations Cup CDIO5*.

Damsey’s offspring have earned much acclaim, and one of his daughters competed over the weekend in Canada at the Equivents International Classic CDI-W, which was sponsored by Leatherdale Farms. Diana C, ridden by Diane Creech, finished fifth in both the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I at the show in Cedar Valley, Ontario. The promising 8-year-old Hanoverian mare (Damsey FRH-Belinda, Brentano II) just began competing internationally at small tour in early 2015.

Also at the Equivents CDI-W, Creech rode Hallmark, an 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding, to second place finishes in the Prix St. Georges and Intermediaire I. Hallmark is a son of another Leatherdale stallion, His Highness, who died in 2007 but lives on through his many successful offspring.

“We are so proud of Hallmark and Diana for achieving such great results in the small tour,” Creech said. “Hallmark showed his strong work in a very consistent way. Youngster Diana C, still being a little exuberant at times, showed so much quality and talent one can only dream of.”

She added, “Louise and Doug Leatherdale are such wonderful supporters of dressage and had sponsored this CDI, which was organized beautifully by Cara Whitham’s Equivents. I am very grateful for Louise and Doug’s generosity, not only to me, but also to our sport!”

An exciting young gelding by Damsey was among a group of young horses who earned impressive scores at the Dressage Lite I and II shows in Mason City, Iowa. Dublin L scored 81.200 percent on Friday and 80.000 percent on Sunday in 4-year-old tests with rider Mike Suchanek.

“Dublin is calm in the show ring and gets the job done really well,” Suchanek said. “I’m very impressed with his demeanor all the way through. He has the Damsey breeding; the reach of his shoulder is getting better and his movement is really coming along.”

Other highlights at the show included strong performances by Fleur de Lis L, a mare by First Dance who scored 80.600 percent in a 6-year-old test and 73.077 percent at Third Level. Suchanek also made his Fourth Level debut with Corenzo and scored 75.000 percent.

All but one of the eight horses competing in the U.S. and Canada were offspring of Leatherdale stallions.

“It shows the fantastic breeding program that they have,” Suchanek said. “The horses are so rideable and trainable that they show really well.”
